The change from liquid acid based reagents to solid has sevaral reasons: most importantly liquid sulfuric acid in concentrations above 15% has been illegal for individuals in Europe for several years now, but also the new formulas have significantly extended shelf life (years even in room temperature) and are much less prone to spills and burns.

The issues you described are not normal and suggest you are not using the reagents according to instructions. Crystalline reagents are easy to use, but require a minute or two of getting used to, before first use we encourage you to both read the booklet carefully and watch the short how-to videos we have prepared. 1) Reactions are absolutely as strong as with liquid formulas, if reagents are stored properly and shaken before use. 2) You are supposed to take a few seconds to clean bottle neck and cap after use; as shown on how-to videos it is also helpful to firmly tap the bottles to shake off any crystals from cap into the bottle. 3) As also shown on videos, even simply tapping side of a bottle is perfeclty fine for pouring reagent out, you can also use a plastic tool to apply small amounts if you wish.

Regarding plastic spatulas – they are not required to use reagents, personally we prefer to simply pour out crystals out of a bottle by tapping it repeatedly, and use the spatula for samples only. We are working on implementing a recommendation system on our website to suggest optionally getting multiply plastic spatulas. Regarding big size of the booklet – the huge charts are only meant to show the risk of false positives when using any reagent individually.
